Fight or Flight

Adrenal (stress) glands control your fight or flight response.  They also control the hormones related to many things, including sleep and weight loss.  Do you have unexplained fatigue, weight troubles, or sleep disturbances?  Your adrenals may be fatigued, or in exhaustion.

Can Digestive Problems Lead to Disease

Leaky-Gut-Syndrome (1) What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Disruption of the gut lining can be caused by food intolerance, alcohol, stress, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, candida, fatty acid deficiencies which lead to disruption of  the gut wall.  The disruption of the gut lining leads to improper absorption. Food is seen as an invader causing antibodies to be produced, inflaming the gut wall. Multiple food intolerances cause these antibodies. These antibodies form a complex with food, then are deposited in gut tissue which lead to gut inflammation.

An inflamed gut causes nutrients and waste to leak from the gut and worsens improper absorption and more antibodies are produced leading to leaky gut syndrome.

Signs of leaky gut syndrome include digestive issues like bloating, gas, diarrhea, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).  Seasonal allergies or asthma can also be a sign. If you have hormonal imbalances like polycystic ovary disease or PMS, an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, celiac disease, psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis, or if you have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or candida, these are all indicators that you may be suffering from leaky gut syndrome.

The solution to repairing your gut is to have a clean way of eating. You want to focus on an anti-inflammatory diet. Simply put, your diet should consist of protein, vegetables, and a little bit of fruit. You should avoid grains, dairy, prepared and processed food products, as well as meats with antibiotics or hormones. There are other foods that may need to be avoided as well depending on one’s health history. There are certain supplements and vitamins that can help speed up the repair of the gut wall.

At Voitenko Wellness we do a through consultation and examination to help create a plan of attack. The goal is to create optimum health to help bring back quality of life.

Migraine Headaches Stop You in Your Tracks

Can You Please Say That Again? My Head Hurts So Bad I Can’t Hear You!

Migraine headache symptoms are nasty. A person with migraine headaches will tell you that their quality of life is not what it should be. Though many sufferers cope and think that there is no solution and that they just have to live with the pain, it’s not true!

Symptoms of migraine headaches include: pain(usually on one side of the head), nausea, dizziness, and visual disturbances. The aura is what we name the visual disturbance. This can occur before or during a migraine headache. This is the nervous system coming into play. The visual disturbances include: visual loss, flashes of light, and bright spots. The aura can also include speech (verbal), movement (motor), or touching sensation (sensory) disturbances.

Migraines can be caused by past traumas such as a head injury or whiplash. These traumas can cause brain stem changes. These injuries can also damage the spine causing postural changes that when evaluated by a Chiropractor can be treated. Therefore, improving and lessening stress on the spinal nerves creates better nerve function. In chiropractic, our treatments are called adjustments. We also do muscle therapies to help reduce tension and tightness.

Your day to day activities cause postural changes that can also bring on migraine headaches. You must look at the ergonomics of your work space. Daily stretches and exercise will also improve posture.

Looking at your diet is important as well. Making sure you are drinking enough water will help keep you hydrated. Dehydration leads to headaches. Certain foods cause inflammation which can lead to headaches and pain. Red meat, red wine, and egg yolk all have arachidonic acids. Arachidonic acid causes inflammation, which can cause a headache. Having a diet that consists of too much sugar can also lead to inflammation. Having too many carbohydrates, and not being active, leads to a spike in blood sugar. A rise in blood sugar causes pain and inflammation. If you want pain, eat more sugar. If you want to avoid pain, eat less sugar!

Besides neurological stress and diet, hormone imbalance, and toxicity must be evaluated as a causative factor and should be ruled out.

What Type of Calcium Helps Prevent Osteoporosis?

By Dr. Amber Voitenko

 Good calcium vs Bad calcium

In practice I get asked this question by women who are worried about their bone health, as well as their family’s bone health. Teeth and bone strength, nerve function, hormones, and blood pressure are all related to calcium. So to avoid problems like osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and tooth decay, we need to know what type of calcium to take and the amount.

Our two top choices are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Calcium carbonate needs to be taken with meals because it needs the stomach acid to be absorbed. It has more calcium per dose than calcium citrate. Calcium citrate can be taken on an empty stomach but has less calcium per supplement. Calcium citrate is easier to digest.

Ages nine and up should be consuming between 1,000 mg  to 1,300 per day. You should take 500 mg at a time for better absorption. Also, Vitamin D is needed for the absorption of Calcium. Most people are depleted in Vitamin D. One should be taking at least 3,000 IUs of Vitamin D daily.

Quality is important, you do not want lead and other metals in your calcium supplement. It should say USP (United States Pharmacopeia) on the label. But, you can also dissolve your supplement in clear vinegar.  If it dissolves in 30 minutes it should also do so in your stomach.

Is it Really Possible to Balance Hormones Naturally?

Natural Hormone Balancing in Women

Did you know that PMS, blood sugar levels and estrogen dominance all have similar symptoms? Estrogen dominance is when the body has excess estrogen and is unopposed or not balanced by progesterone. This syndrome occurs due to specific situations, such as hormone replacement therapy, exposure to xenoestrogens, birth control pills, and hysterectomies.  Xenoestrogens are found in skin care, food, insecticides, and building supplies.

According to Dr. John Lee , M.D. he feels that, “estrogen dominance is a huge factor in conditions such as, uterine fibroids, breast/uterine cancer, premenopausal bone loss, PMS and Fibrocystic breasts.”

Here is a list of symptoms that can be caused or made worse by estrogen dominance:

Headaches, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, insomnia, infertility, allergies, autoimmune disorders, osteoporosis, and PMS

Diet plays a role in estrogen dominance. Looking closely at what foods are being eaten and the quantity is very important for the balancing of a women’s  hormones.
