The Four Phases of Care

By Dr. Amber Voitenko
 on December 13, 2019

Relief, Corrective, Strengthening, and Wellness

As our Patient Educator explains in this video, there are four phases of care: relief, corrective, strengthening, and wellness. Each phase is important to address to get the person in pain back to optimal health.

The relief phase of care is where we address the symptoms that are occurring to help bring a reduction of those symptoms and the resulting inflammation.

The corrective phase of care is next. In this phase of care, the symptoms are improving or disappearing. The main part of this phase is that function and mobility are starting to come back.

After relief and correction, comes strengthening. This is where improved function and mobility lead to increased strength returning. This builds back the muscles to keep the correction in place.

The final phase of care is wellness. This is the phase that maintains the correction and strength. Functionality has returned and the person is able to maintain their spine in order to prevent future injury.

Voitenko Wellness treats all kinds of pain from acute to chronic. If you or someone you know is ready to get well, please call (714) 730-2225.

What is a spinal misalignment called?

By Dr. Amber Voitenko
 on December 13, 2019

Spinal misalignment is called a subluxation

Subluxation is not a dislocation of a joint. “Sub” means less than and “luxation” means dislocation. A subluxation is less than a dislocation that can happen at any joint. When one has a subluxation it causes many dysfunctions. It can lead to dysfunction of the spinal nerves. Your nerves control all muscles, glands, organs and tissues. It can even lead to osteoarthritis if not treated properly. Chiropractors handle subluxation and prevent spinal decay, which in turn helps prevent disease.

Coughing and Can’t Sleep?

Don’t forget the tea tree…

This cold and flu season has been challenging on our immune systems this year. Tools are what one needs to fight off the bugs. Some helpful tips to battle these bugs!

We have all heard how stress affects our immune system.  Our nervous system is our computer that controls all function. If it has too much stress it crashes leading to illness. Physical stress is a big problem for the nervous system. Chiropractic adjustments can help the body’s immune response! It helps take the stress off the body!!!

Another problem is a blocked lymphatic system. This is another reason the body gets ill. Simply massage from the ear down along the neck to the clavicle. Then massage under the clavicle from the sternum out to the shoulder. Then massage from the medial clavicle down the sternum on both sides. This helps to create movement of the lymphatic system. Flushing the system out! See video above.

Another great choice is oregano, it acts as a natural antibiotic. We have a special formula that contains oregano.

If one has a cough, in a diffuser you can add 3-5 drops of melaleuca, also known as tea tree oil. Melaleuca is known to have properties to help fight off viruses and bacteria.  When used in a diffuser one is inhaling the melaleuca, so as to get it into the lungs. Very good for a persistent cough!!

Boosting your immune system is another way to fight off infection. There is a specific formula we use at Voitenko Wellness that helps stop the virus from jumping from cell to cell and mutating. It’s a natural herbal approach that is very affective.

Shoulder, Arm, and Hand Injuries

December 13, 2019

shoulder and back pain

Fighting Extremity Injuries Through Chiropractic

Many people face chronic pain from unresolved shoulder, arm, and hand injuries like bursitis, neuritis, neuralgia, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel, and fibrositis. These injuries can cause long term, recurring pain because the area of injury is weakened.

How do you know something is wrong? When you get pain sensors forcing your attention to the body part in question, the brain is communicating via billions of nerves that extend from the brain through the entire body, branching off to our different organs, muscles, tissues.

In the case of shoulder, arm, or hand pain, it is commonly a brachial plexus injury. The brachial plexus is an intricate network of nerves in the back and neck which can become irritated or inflamed due to trauma, injury, or misalignment of the spine. Injury to the brachial plexus nerves can result in muscle weakness, shoulder or neck stiffness, pain (radiating or pinpointed), numbness, or “pins and needles” nerve sensations. Severe injuries to this region can also result in dizziness, headaches, and limited mobility.

A technique called muscle stripping can be coupled with chiropractic adjustments at our office to effectively treat these injuries and prevent symptoms from returning.

Chiropractic adjustments have been well-documented in correcting shoulder, arm, and hand injuries, but waiting until the need for correction is never the best choice. It is always important to take precautions to prevent injuries from occurring. You can keep your body strong and more resilient to trauma by strengthening weak muscles with exercise, fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to heal itself, and getting regular adjustments to prevent damage to the spine and nervous system.

Double Crush Syndrome or Carpal Tunnel

By Dr. Amber Voitenko

doublecrushPinched Median Nerve…

Identifying the reason why one has symptoms is important when it comes to carpal tunnel. Double crush syndrome can be the reason why one has wrist pain. Double crush syndrome is often misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel. Double crush syndrome can be treated successfully with chiropractic care and innovative muscle therapy, such as Rapid Release Technology, Active Release Technique, or FDA approved Cold Laser.

Before surgery for carpal tunnel one should look into the possibility of the problem of a compromised median nerve in the cervical spine. This can be due to an old whiplash injury, bad posture in the work place, and even osteoarthritis.

A thorough examination, as well as x-ray and even MRI studies, doing specific neurological and orthopedic tests can help identify the problem.

Kinesiology Tape: Does it Work?

By Dr. Amber Voitenko
 on December 13, 2019

applying-tape-neck-4-no-borderTaping, Taping and more Taping…

Olympians, triathletes, volleyball players, and weekend warriors use kinesio tape and claim that it helps them perform. So what does the tape do for these athletes? The purpose of  kinesiology tape is to improve circulation, support muscles, and help heal and prevent muscle injury. The tape allows freedom of the muscle to move creating circulation, which brings oxygen and nutrients to that area of the body being taped.  This aids to speed up the healing process.

This tape was designed by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a Chiropractor and acupuncturist. He believed a flexible tape would create better circulation and would be less restrictive for the athlete.

Conditions of the body that would need the tape along with Chiropractic treatments include:

  • Knee pain; medial knee pain due to a tight iliotibial band and patellar pain
  • Low Back pain
  • Trigger points in the neck and between the shouders
  • Shoulders: Rotator Cuff pain or over usage of shoulder or postural improvement
  • Ankles and feet to correct pronation or supination problems
  • Areas of surgery to speed up recovery

The tape is a latex-free hypoallergenic cotton fiber material. The tape is sweat-proof so it holds strong during intense workout. It can get wet and can be worn in a pool and shower. The tape, when applied correctly, can last for three to five days.

Why Live with Discomfort?

By Dr. Amber Voitenko
 on December 13, 2019

Life is short, live pain free…

Sometimes we do not realize what pain and tension does to our lifestyle. It can stop us in our tracks. Sometimes we cope with the discomfort and then it becomes worse. Steve had been dealing with tension and pain in his back. He also for years had been dealing with plantar fasciitis. He thought it would work itself out and then realized it was effecting his job. After looking at his ailments and going through an exam, he decided to get treatment to get out of pain. He also decided to commit to exercise. He now has less tension, his feet are pain free, and he has better movement. Great job Steve!
